Vintage Faux Tortoiseshell Mantilla Comb

This medium large and handsome Spanish mantilla style hair comb or peinita  probably dates from the later 20th century onwards. It has a rectangular shaped  heading with a design of conventional leaf scrollwork.

This comb can be worn with a mantilla veil for those who like a moderate effect which can be seen on the mannequin. It is also lightweight enough to be used for Flamenco and other Spanish dance forms.

Dark Amber Celluloid Overlay Mantilla Comb

Ref: MA-0901-007

This interesting mantilla comb or peinita dates from the Art Deco period of the early 20th century and is made in a two tone combination.

One of the most striking things about early celluloid combs are that many were made by a process called overlay, where two contrasting colours were cast one upon the other. Here for example translucent pale amber has been cast with a warm mottled brown upper shell, producing an interesting two toned effect. This is best seen on the edges of the design and the tips of the tines.

The palm leaf in the centre shows the popular Egyptian influence and is placed against a latticework panel.

The final photograph is taken from a contemporary photograph of a Spanish lady dressed for fiesta.
